You also have to be comfortable with the possibility of the free service going away at some point, but price increases will happen with almost any service you choose.

I think you have to be OK with Amazon using your photos as AI training data. They have unlimited RAW photo backup for Prime members. I bring my SSD with me to use with my laptop and connect when I have the chance though that isn’t often if I’m on a camping trip but I always turn off and unplug my iMac when I’m gone for extended time anyway so no problems. That is what they state but they also state that if you are going to disconnect your HD for say a vacation, when you shut down your computer, it knows that you aren’t deleting files and nothing will be affected. Some complain that if you disconnect your hard drive for more than 30 days, BB thinks you want to delete the files. It does take a long time for an initial backup but then it constantly backs up in the background.

BB won’t backup system files or apps but I have my iMac backed up plus my Samsung SSD with all photos, videos, music, documents - about 1.25 TB. Since BB is unlimited, as are many other services, why only backup “some” photos or just “important docs, just backup everything. There is no compression of any files and all RAW files are exactly as you have them on your computer or external drive. I’ve been using Backblaze for 2 years, after using both Carbonite and CrashPlan for many years. When I retrieve my raw images from them, will there be any significant change in them. Most likely my data will be compressed by these services. Two that I'm thinking of are iDrive and Backblaze. To supplement that, I'm considering online storage for some of my raw images as well as other important documents.
