Many people only associate being disabled with someone who uses a wheelchair or a walking aid, and whilst these forms of disability are equally important, the disabled experience is so much more varied and complex than that.Īutism, chronic pain, learning difficulties and disabilities, as well as mental health conditions, mobility and speech impairments, and sensory loss such as speech, sight and hearing loss or Deafness are all kinds of hidden or invisible disability. It is a disability that may not seem apparent when looking at someone. What is an invisible or hidden disability?

Have a question? Message your Disability Officer here. These lanyards are intended to be warm only by those that identify as having a hidden disability. You can collect one from Monday 17th October. To get the ball rolling, we will be giving out 200 Sunflower Laynards ourselves from the Students' Union Main reception (ground floor, next to the Coop) for any student wanting one. This will allow students to access support without disclosing the details of their disability.

Throughout the week, we want to showcase to the University the importance of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme on campus by asking them to commit to providing free sunflower lanyards to all Students who need one. Did you know that the Sunflower is the globally-recognized symbol for non-visible disabilities (also known as hidden disabilities or invisible disabilities)? This is the message we want to get out onto campus, by raising more awareness around invisible/hidden disabilities.
